- Health and Safety Hazards– As compared to the rest of the civilian workforce hospital workers have the highest percentage of workers compensation claims due to: sprains and strains, infection and parasitic diseases, dermatitis, hepatitis, mental disorders, eye diseases, influenza and toxic hepatitis. Other common injuries include cuts, fractures, burns, scratches and bruising.
- NIOSH Hospital Survey- This survey found that only half of all hospitals were offering regular safety and health education programs. In some hospitals there was a lack of immunization programs all together. However, since this survey most hospitals have worked to increase the number of worker health programs.
- Preventing Health Care Injury and Illness– To help reduce the number of hospital employees being injured or made ill while at work the CDC recommends that hospitals: inspect workplaces regularly to identify safety and health concerns, review accident rates and preventative measures, organize educational classes and thoroughly investigate accidents.
