Connecticut (CT) Drunk Driving Statistics and Prevention

Though we all hear the message again and again, drunk driving accidents are still a leading cause of death in Connecticut and across the nation.  As personal injury attorneys we have seen all too many serious injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers.  To help stop this trend we would like to ensure that information on preventing drunk driving is readily accessible to the public.  Oh this page we have compiled a list of local drunk driving resources and statistics.  This list should be seen as a work in progress.  We will add new CT resources as we find them.

  • Connecticut DMV– The CT Department of Motor Vehicles is a tremendous resource for information on DUI laws, statistics and prevention measures. A FAQ section about drinking and driving offers easy to read questions and answers on subjects such as how alcohol affects a person’s ability to drive and what a DUI means to drivers. This page would be useful to parents as they discuss drinking and driving with their teenagers. A breakdown of Connecticut’s drunk driving lawallows drivers to understand the legal implications of a DUI or DWI.
  • MADD Connecticut– Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a national organization dedicated to stopping “drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and preventing underage drinking.” MADD has an active chapter in Connecticut. Their headquarters are in East Haven and chapter leaders can be reached by phone or e-mail by clicking here. You can look for local events or discuss drunk driving in Connecticut by visiting their facebook page.
  • The Century Council– The Century Council is “an association of distillers fighting drunk driving & underage drinking.” While they offer a variety of information for any concerned citizen they also provide drunk driving statistics by state. An example on the page for CT includes data concerning the number of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities. In 2008, 86 people lost their lives in Connecticut during alcohol related accidents.

The staff and attorneys at Glass, Lebovitz, Kasheta & Bren hope that the resources listed above help you better understand the serious repercussions of driving drunk.  We have seen too many people hurt or killed at the hands of drunk driver.

Common Injuries Caused by Motorcycle Accidents

The hospitals and trauma centers across Connecticut treat thousands of accident victims each year.  Though many accident victims, even bikers, escape accidents without serious injury, countless others do not escape unscathed.

Below you will find some of the most common injuries caused by motorcycle accidents.  The types of injuries sustained during a motorcycle crash are often more serious than in a typical auto accident.  Some, such as biker’s arm, are injuries specific to motorcycle riders.

  • Biker’s Arm– When a biker hits the ground during an accident the nerves in the upper arm may be damaged. Depending on the severity of the damage the biker may lose some or all of the movement in the affected arm.
  • Head Injury or Brain Trauma- Though the rates of head injury in bikers decrease with helmet use any serious accident can cause trauma to the head. The severity of this injury can result in any number of side effects to include: seizures, paralysis, loss of memory and change in brain function. Though some of these symptoms can be temporary others may last a lifetime and cause permanent disability.
  • Broken Joints and Bones- The impact of the body hitting the road, at nearly any speed, can cause serious joint or bone fractures. The elbows, knees, wrists, hips and shoulders are particularly susceptible to damage during a motorcycle accident. Common bones broken during a crash include hand, arm and leg fractures.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries– Spinal cord injuries are among the most serious injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident. Depending on the location of the damage to the spinal cord partial or complete paralysis is possible.

The attorneys at Glass, Lebovitz, Kasheta & Bren hope that the above information helps you better understand the more common injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident.  If you have been hurt during a motorcycle accident in Connecticut please consider hiring an experienced attorney at Glass, Lebovitz, Kasheta & Bren today for your free consultation.

Guidelines for Protecting the Safety and Health of Health Care Workers

The Center for Disease Control’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health works to track and prevent illness and injury across the nation.  In this article we will be looking at their findings regarding the safety of health care workers.  Their study,Guidelines for Protecting the Safety and Health of Health Care Workers, looks at the factors that lead to hospital staff illness and injury and recommends guidelines for controlling hospital hazards.

Please read on to learn more about the dangers that heath care workers face in Connecticut and across the nation.

  • Health and Safety Hazards– As compared to the rest of the civilian workforce hospital workers have the highest percentage of workers compensation claims due to: sprains and strains, infection and parasitic diseases, dermatitis, hepatitis, mental disorders, eye diseases, influenza and toxic hepatitis. Other common injuries include cuts, fractures, burns, scratches and bruising.
  • NIOSH Hospital Survey- This survey found that only half of all hospitals were offering regular safety and health education programs. In some hospitals there was a lack of immunization programs all together. However, since this survey most hospitals have worked to increase the number of worker health programs.
  • Preventing Health Care Injury and Illness– To help reduce the number of hospital employees being injured or made ill while at work the CDC recommends that hospitals: inspect workplaces regularly to identify safety and health concerns, review accident rates and preventative measures, organize educational classes and thoroughly investigate accidents.

At the workers compensation law firm of Glass, Lebovitz, Kasheta & Bren we see too many Ct health care workers who have been injured on the job.  We appreciate the work you do, day in and day out, helping the sick and injured.  If you are a nurse, doctor or hospital employee and you have been injured while at work you do have rights.  Please contact your experienced workers comp attorney today for your free consultation.
