The Essentials of a Connecticut Winter Emergency Car Kit

Winter in Connecticut is serious business. When a severe winter storm sets in we all know that we should be prepared. But are we? What would you do if you got into an accident and were unable to call for help for some time? What if the police were unable to reach you for a few hours? A winter emergency, from becoming stuck in a snow bank to running out of gas in a traffic jam can turn a quick car ride into a life-threatening emergency.

Why is a Winter Kit Necessary? I Have a Cell Phone.

If you are hit or become stuck there are several times you may not be able to rely on your phone. Your phone may be out of range or out of battery. In addition, even if you are able to call for help it may be some time before police can reach you. Winter storms and ice can slow emergency response, making what should have been a five minute rescue a many hour ordeal.

What Should be in my Winter Emergency Car Kit?

May of the items listed below would be useful in any emergency kit. However, preparing for winter means adding items that can keep you warm enough to survive in an emergency situation.

• Flashlight
• Flares and a reflective triangle
• Distress sign (weatherproof plastic is best)
• Basic first aid kit
• Multi-tool (will include knife, screwdriver, pliers and more)
• Charged cell phone
• Matches or a lighter
• Boots (if you often wear other shoes)
• Hat
• Coat or fleece
• Gloves
• Jumper cables
• Sand or kitty litter (this is for traction)
• Ice scraper and brush
• Blanket (a heat reflective blanket is best as it will be small and very effective)
• Candy, nuts and other high calorie snacks
• Water

Packing these essentials can potentially protect you from frostbite and may even save your life. Please prepare yourself and keep at least the basic winter emergency kit in your car.
