The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) performs scientific studies and collects highway accident data to help reduce accidents, and the losses and injuries associated with them, in Connecticut and across the United States. The non-profit offers information that is useful for the highway industry and drivers alike. This article, provided to you by the staff and attorneys at the accident law firm of Glass, Lebovitz, Kasheta & Bren, will help you better use and understand the safety resources provided by the IIHS.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an, "independent, nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses- deaths, injuries and property damage- from crashes on the nation's highways." In order to work toward these goals the IIHS studies insurance data, using this information to guide policy recommendations and safety programs. Please read on to learn more about how the safety information provided by IIHS can help drivers in Connecticut and across the nation avoid accidents and make informed driving decisions. Click on any of the underlined links below to visit the IIHS website directly.

  • Top Vehicle Safety Picks- In order to test the safety of a vehicle, the IIHS rates its performance in high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test and evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. Based on the results of the above tests, vehicles are rated as good, acceptable, marginal, or poor. To earn the title of Top Safety Pick a car, truck, minivan or SUV must have good ratings in all four tests.
  • Research and statistics- Based on research and industry statistics, the IIHS offers a vast array of driver safety information. Highlighted topics include booster seat ratings, choosing the right child restraint, fatality facts and red light running.
  • Driver information and videos- Many free downloadable brochures are available here. Topics range from kids and airbags to shopping for a safer car. Videos, such as Keeping Children Safe in Crashes, can be purchased as well.
