The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an, "independent, nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses- deaths, injuries and property damage- from crashes on the nation's highways." • Top Vehicle Safety Picks- In order to test the safety of a vehicle, the IIHS rates its performance in high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test and evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. Based on the results of the above tests, vehicles are rated as good, acceptable, marginal, or poor. To earn the title of Top Safety Pick a car, truck, minivan or SUV must have good ratings in all four tests.
