Their study, Guidelines for Protecting the Safety and Health of Health Care Workers, looks at the factors that lead to hospital staff illness and injury and recommends guidelines for controlling hospital hazards.

  • Health and Safety Hazards- As compared to the rest of the civilian workforce hospital workers have the highest percentage of workers compensation claims due to: sprains and strains, infection and parasitic diseases, dermatitis, hepatitis, mental disorders, eye diseases, influenza and toxic hepatitis. Other common injuries include cuts, fractures, burns, scratches and bruising.
  • NIOSH Hospital Survey- This survey found that only half of all hospitals were offering regular safety and health education programs. In some hospitals there was a lack of immunization programs all together. However, since this survey most hospitals have worked to increase the number of worker health programs.
  • Preventing Health Care Injury and Illness- To help reduce the number of hospital employees being injured or made ill while at work the CDC recommends that hospitals: inspect workplaces regularly to identify safety and health concerns, review accident rates and preventative measures, organize educational classes and thoroughly investigate accidents.
