Common Injuries Sustained During Car Accidents

In 2008 264 people lost their lives in Connecticut traffic accidents. This total includes 15 deadly car accidents in Windham County and 13 in Tolland County. These figures do not include the thousands of Connecticut auto accidents that lead to serious and life altering injuries and disability. Please read on to learn more about the most common car accident injuries.

Though this list does not cover every injury sustained during a car accident it does discuss the most common types of injuries. Please click on the links below to learn more about specific injuries.

  • Whiplash- Whiplash may occur during a car accident. In Connecticut alone hundreds of people are affected by this injury each year. The injury occurs when the head moves suddenly backwards and then forward. This motion can push the neck muscles and ligaments beyond their normal range of motion causing either severe or mild injury. Though some may recover from the injury relatively quickly a more severe case can lead to permanent pain and disability.
  • Back Injury- A back injury can lead to permanent disability, as outlined below, or can be minor, needing no surgery and leading to only temporary pain and discomfort. In a car accident the force of the crash may cause injury to the muscles in your back and neck. These can be serious and painful injuries that do not present themselves for days after the accident.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury or Head Trauma- A traumatic brain injury or TBI is caused when a sudden blow to the head causes the brain to slam into the skull. This concussive force can cause the brain to bruise and tear nerve fibers. The tearing often causes intracranial bleeding and pressure. While a mild brain injury may only cause a headache or confusion a severe TBI can lead to permanent disability or death.
  • Spinal Cord Injury- An injury to the spinal cord often causes disability. The extent of the disability, in this case paralysis, depends on where the injury occurred along the spinal cord. Lower injuries result in paralysis of the lower extremities while an injury high on the spinal cord near the neck may cause total paralysis. Car and motorcycle accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries. Hundreds of accident victims are disabled by spinal cord injuries each year.
  • Knee Damage- In an accident the knee may strike the car, causing serious injury. Knee injuries most common during an accident include broken bones, dislocation, sprains and strains.

The attorneys at Glass, Lebovitz, Kasheta & Bren hope that this brief overview of common car accident injuries is of use to you as an auto accident victim.
